Would you like to operate the world’s largest working triple-expansion steam engine? 

Now’s your chance to become a Guest Driver at Kempton Steam Museum and do just that!

Your day begins early with a tour of the engine house and an introduction to the team of volunteers. You will then get involved with all the different tasks needed to get the Sir William Prescott steam pumping engine working, before getting your hands on the operating controls. You will be shown how to start the triple-expansion engine with the barring engines, how to control its running and how to stop it.

At the end of the day you’ll then receive a signed certificate to cherish and show off to your friends and family! 

Available on our steaming weekend dates, the Guest Driver Experience costs £110 per person. 

Drivers must be over 1.4m/ 4’7″ tall. Included in the price are a set of booklets detailing the history and technical specifications of the engine. The only thing you need is a pair of overalls!

PLEASE NOTE: Experience tickets must be booked at least 7 days before the steaming event that you wish to attend.

The museum is an industrial environment containing moving machinery, steep stairs and hard surfaces. Children must remain supervised at all times.

We have an access lift which enables step free access from the ground to the main museum floor.
